PLP member Kimberly Goldsmith was late to the regularly scheduled 4pm PLP event on Wednesday, November 14, 2007; but, with good reason. Kim was recognized as one of 10 Outstanding Student Employees for the Fall 2007 semester on this day. PLP figured that was a good enough reason to be late to an event!
Kim, a senior finance major, works on campus as a student assistant in the Student Money Management Center. The Student Money Management Center, an outreach program administered by the Division of Student Development, provides tools and solutions students need to achieve financial freedom and is dedicated to bringing financial literacy to students. Since it's inception in 2005, the SMMC has been honored with numerous accolades and awards. Kim, has been a valuable part of that success and her supervisors have recognized her contribution. Danielle Champagne, Assistant Director, nominated Kim and described Kim's contributions to the students and university by stating, "Through her service and dedication to students, Kim has gained a great amount of respect and trust. Students do not hesitate to approach and ask for her support as they face the very sensitive subject of their personal finances. In turn, she provides students with the confidence and resources they need to apply themselves and to accept greater independence where their personal finances and debt obligations are concerned. Kim strives to empower students to approach their financial needs and obligations with structure, understanding, and a strong base of knowledge."
Kim was pleasantly surprised to know why she was asked by her supervisor to be late to a PLP function. After receiving the award, she stated "I'm honored to receive this award. There are many student employees at the University of North Texas, and to be recognized is truly an accomplishment. I take pride in my work and enjoy helping students gain financial independence. I would also like to congratulate my fellow recipients and other student employees for their hard work that help make UNT a great university."
So, even though PLP coaches students on proper business etiqutte, being late for events isn't always a bad thing.
** The Outstanding Student Employee Award recognizes student employees for their exceptional performance, productivity, customer service and other initiatives that have resulted in meeting the educational and organizational goals of the University. The award is sponsored by the UNT Career Center.
