The DFW Chapter of Risk and Insurance Management Society, Inc. (RIMS) has been a strong supporter of the Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) program at UNT for many years. This generous group provides sponsorships for events, scholarships for students, and networking opportunities with risk management and insurance professionals.
Each year the DFW Chapter awards scholarships to deserving students majoring in risk management and insurance. This year, five UNT students were awarded academic scholarships at the RIMS Conference in October 2008:
- Rachel Alexander-Lindsey - Rachel plans to graduate from UNT in May 2009 and work as a commercial underwriter and obtain her CPCU designation
- Ingrid Reeves - Ingrid plans to graduate in December 2008. She plans to take the GMAT and apply for graduate school in fall 2008.
- Jo Savage - Jo plans to graduate in May 2009. She had the opportunity to study abroad this summer in Thailand and Vietnam, where she learned about international business.
- Rachel Somerford - Rachel plans on graduating in May 2009 and is the 2008 Spencer Educational Foundation recipient for the DFW RIMS scholarship
- Raymond Tate - Raymond plant on graduating in December 2009. His career aspiration is to become a insurance agent.
In addition, the RIMS DFW Chapter awards scholarships to RMI students to attend the RIMS Annual Conference & Exhibition. The scholarship is an all expense paid trip with RIMS/DFW providing airfare, hotel expenses, registration, and a small stipend for these students. This conference is a great opportunity for these students to learn from and network with risk managers from a wide range of industries all across the country.
The DFW chapter also sponsors industry-student mixers and field trips to Austin to visit the Texas Department of Insurance and insurance companies.
Recently, the DFW Chapter partnered with the Spencer Foundation (http://www.spencer.org/) to establish the Spencer/DFW-RIMS Scholar Program. This year, Rachel Somerford, a RMI junior at UNT, was chosen as the very first Spencer/DFW-RIMS Scholar.
