Insurance Council of Texas Honors UNT Students with Scholarships

The Insurance Council of Texas Education Foundation awarded 14 academic scholarships to students from three universites in ceremonies in November. Scholarships were awarded to four University of North Texas students: Rachel Alexander-Lindsey, Bryce Kearney, Jared Doughney, Raymond Tate and Rachel Somerford. Professors acknowledged each scholarship recipient as exemplary students.

“This is the seventh year that we have awarded scholarships to university students who have expressed an interest in an insurance and risk management career,” said Mark Hanna, a spokesman for the Insurance Council of Texas. “The accomplishments that these young men and women have already made are truly amazing.”

Dr. Brenda Wells of North Texas said it’s not uncommon to find most of her students holding down full-time jobs while maintaining excellent grades. University of North Texas student Rachel Somerford described what the ICT Education Foundation scholarship meant for her. “I have been funding myself through college for the past couple of years, so getting a scholarship means more than you know. It is so encouraging to me, as a student, to visibly see the industry's support of my educational pursuit. I hope to utilize my Risk Management and Insurance Major in the insurance profession upon graduation,” Somerford said.

ICT’s scholarship program began in 2002 and to date, more than $200,000 in scholarships and academic funding has been awarded students and universities. The Insurance Council of Texas remains committed to helping students in higher education learn more of the intricacies of insurance through the financial assistance of scholarships such as these.

The Insurance Council of Texas is the largest state insurance trade association in the country consisting of approximately 500 property and casualty insurers writing business in Texas. For more information turn to ICT’s Web site at www.insurancecouncil.org.
