As part of an ongoing partnership, the Professional Leadership Program (PLP) received bonus air time on KWRD, 100.7 FM. The 90-second spots have been running on-air since March 2009. Each spot highlights a PLP student and the benefits of becoming a mentor for the program.
The Professional Leadership Program is a cooperative effort between the University of North Texas College of Business and corporate sponsors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex community. Taking students from "backpack to briefcase," PLP provides college students exposure to skills they will need as they prepare for the complex world of employment.
The WORD currently broadcasts UNT football and basketball games. Cheryl Pruitt, account executive for The WORD, said the station works with schools as part of their commitment to the community. However, UNT is their primary collegiate partner.
Ms. Pruitt became aware of the program when she met Shannon Lehmer, an outstanding PLP student, at a local leadership event. Shannon’s excitement about PLP sparked an interest in Ms. Pruitt to find opportunities for enhanced involvement and collaboration.
Ms. Pruitt believes The WORD listeners are exactly the kind of mentors PLP needs- involved and engaged. “This is totally a win-win-win for UNT students, the station and our listeners,” she said. “It is bringing the opportunity for service in our community to the quality WORD audience.”
