Biography
When Dr. Michael K. Braswell came to the University of North Texas in January, 1990, it was a return home. Born in Dallas and raised in Fort Worth, Dr. Braswell earned a B.A. in economics from Austin College and held the Thomas Edgar and Kathryn Heard Craig Economics Fellowship. In addition to being admitted to the Alpha Chi Honor Society, he became a member of the "A" Association by playing football and baseball. Dr.Braswell then attended the University of Texas School of Law in Austin earning a J.D. and induction into the Phi Delta Phi Legal Honor Society. While attending college, Dr. Braswell was employed first by IBM and then the Internal Revenue Service.
After admission to the Bar in Texas, Colorado, and the federal courts, Dr.Braswell practiced law in Denver,Colorado, for almost twenty years while teaching some law classes at the Community College of Denver. Clients included many small businesses, a large downtown bank, and a major credit card company.
After a year as a Fulbright Scholar in London, England, Dr. Braswell accepted a teaching position at the John Wiley Jones School of Business, State University of New York at Geneseo. He also acted as a Small Business Institute Director and was on the Board of the Geneseo Business and Industry Center which promoted economic development in conjunction with the New York Economic Development Office. This return to academia eventually led back to the University of North Texas in 1990.
Dr. Braswell was Chair of the Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Law Department of the College of Business at the University of North Texas from June, 2000 through August, 2004. As Chair he participated in the raising of funds for the department in the amount of approximately 3.5 million dollars including funds for the Student Managed Investment Fund, the Texas Apartment Association Professorship and Scholarships, and the Financial Services Center. In September, 2004, he became the Texas Apartment Association Professor of Residential Property Management. He teaches Property Management Law and coordinates the Residential Property Management Program, as well as teaching Real Estate Law and the Legal and Ethical Environment of Business.
Dr. Braswell has been a member of state and local bar associations in Texas and Colorado, the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, the Board of Directors of the Dallas/Fort Worth Fulbright Alumni Association, the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, and the Southern Academy of Legal Studies in Business. He has also coached numerous youth basketball and baseball teams while raising money for many "booster" organizations.
He has numerous publications in law reviews and other national and regional journals with several research awards including the Ralph C. Hoeber Award for "Excellence in Research" presented by the Academy of Legal Studies in Business for an article in the American Business Law Journal. Dr. Braswell's research interests have included real estate, employment discrimination, affirmative action, and international legal issues.
He is the proud parent of two, Sean (28) and Courtney(22). Sean, two-time Texas 5-A All State Shortstop and University of Texas at Austin varsity baseball player, attended graduate school for five years at Oxford University in England as a Rhodes Scholar. He has two Master's Degrees from Oxford and has submitted his doctoral dissertation and will complete his oral exams in September, 2005, for his Ph.D. He is also currently a second year law student at Harvard Law School. Courtney, another decorated honor student and athlete, graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin in May, 2004. She is a licensed Clinical Dietician at the Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island.
